Fossils, paintings and curiosities in jars: These are just some of the marvels that can be found at the Staten Island Museum. Founded in 1881, the Museum is home to more than two million artifacts and specimens from ancient to contemporary periods. This “mini-Smithsonian” is rich with arts, natural sciences and local history. The Museum’s extensive art collection has pieces ranging from Ancient Egyptian to Modern works and its extensive Natural Science Collection includes minerals, a “Cabinet of Curiosities,” and examples of native animals. Visitors can also experience the life of the Lenape, the first Staten Islanders. With artifacts dating back 12,000 years, this is the most comprehensive exhibit about the region's Native Americans in New York City. The a triple-landmarked, LEED Gold certified space on the grounds of Snug Harbor features new exhibitions and a life-size mastodon replica.
